Outreach

In order to address its recruitment and succession planning goals, DGACM initiated the Universities Outreach Programme. It has three dimensions: 1) to ensure better visibility of language career opportunities at the United Nations; 2) to help candidates to better prepare for the competitive language exams in order to be recruited by the Organization; and 3) to explore other potential avenues for cooperation between international organizations and training institutions, for instance in the area of external training for linguists already working in the international organizations.

In 2009-February 2012, DGACM/UNHQ provided 446 working days of awareness-raising and/or pedagogical assistance to its partner universities in the form of visits of revisers and interpreters with good training skills. Other duty stations also participate and release their staff for pedagogical assistance assignments. All such missions are conducted in connection with the staff members’ own substantive training or home leaves and entail no direct cost for the UN, except for the staff time.
