| AUC joins DGACM’s University Outreach Programme |

On Monday, 20 December 2010, DGACM’s Under-Secretary-General, Mr. Shaaban M. Shaaban, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on behalf of the United Nations with the American University in Cairo (AUC). The AUC is the eighteenth academic institution to join DGACM’s University Outreach Programme and the third whose main language of instruction is Arabic.
As part of the Department’s Outreach to Universities Programme, the MOU aims to enhance cooperation and collaboration between the University and the United Nations in areas of training and preparing AUC students enrolled at the Arabic and Translation Studies Division, which is part of the School of Continuing Education, as candidates for competitive language examinations. Furthermore, the MOU aims to increase awareness of the skill set and knowledge that are required of United Nations languages staff.
Speaking at an interview with The Egyptian Gazette following the signing ceremony in Cairo, USG Shaaban said, “The UN wants to ensure that university graduates are well prepared for the exams; and of placement for the most talented students and graduates”.
The MOU between the UN and AUC, similar to the MOUs that the Organization has already signed with seventeen other universities, will present students with the opportunity to qualify for the United Nations examinations, thus contributing towards building a roster of eligible language specialists, translators and interpreters aspiring to work for the World Organization.
The Department launched the Universities Outreach Programme in 2007 to address the lack of qualified interpreters and translators as well as to highlight language career opportunities available at the United Nations.

Six graduating students from the Monterey Institute’s Translation and Interpretation program were chosen to participate in the first-ever group of summer interns selected by the United Nations’ Translation and Interpretation Services.The internship program is a component of the Memorandum of Understanding signed a year ago between the UN and the Monterey Institute. The Institute is one of 12 advanced language schools worldwide with whom the UN has signed similar MOUs, and the only one in North or South America.

| | DGACM and University of Salamanca organize first conference of universities |
The Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) and the University of Salamanca recently organized a conference bringing together participants from 18 academic institutions that have signed with the United Nations a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in training of applicants for the Organization’s Language Competitive Examinations.
The first of its kind and hosted by the University of Salamanca, the conference was held on Tuesday, 3 May and Wednesday, 4 May 2011 in Salamanca, Spain. The objective of the conference was to build a network of universities and other tertiary-education schools that are committed to enhancing their training programmes for translators and interpreters so that they best meet the requirements of the United Nations.
The conference also aimed to create a synergy between the academic orientation of the universities and the task-oriented, institutional nature of the United Nation's language services; and to start a process leading towards establishment of an Executive Committee for the network of the 18 universities that have signed the above-mentioned memorandum of understanding with the Organization.
 DGACM's Under-Secretary-General, Mr. Shaaban M. Shaaban, co-chaired the plenary session of the conference with the Rector Magnifico of the University of Salamanca, Mr. Daniel Hernández Ruipérez, and engaged in several interactive sessions. Mr. Shaaban remarked, "This two-day conference has been a tremendous success. The participants have held intensive discussions and workshops that have resulted in insightful recommendations and proposals towards strengthening our partnerships and towards building the interpretation and translation skills and capacity of future language professionals".
Language professionals form the backbone of the conference services that the United Nations provides to its Member States. In 2007, DGACM launched an action-oriented Outreach to Universities Programme. The signing of memorandum of understanding with universities is part of the Department’s efforts in the field of succession planning aimed at reaching out to institutions that train language professionals and trainees, including translators, interpreters, verbatim reporters, editors, terminologists, reference assistants, copy preparers and proofreaders, in order to ensure the availability of qualified candidates to fill current and future vacancies in its language services.
Conference participants stressed the importance of this first gathering and voiced their appreciation for DGACM’s Outreach to Universities initiative. Dr. Carlos Fortea, Dean of the School of Translation and Documentation of the University of Salamanca commented that "Our main goal is to serve the societies we live in", while Dr. Jesús Baigorri, an expert in interpreters’ training and a freelance United Nations interpreter himself, said that "Since 2008, thanks to some agreements, we can exchange knowledge without exchanging money. Both the universities and the institutions benefit from this experience".
Envisaged as an annual event, a similar conference will be organized in 2012 and will be hosted by the Université de Mons in Belgium. |
